1. Why the Go/No-Go Matters
The Go/No-Go checklist is the final decision tool before ignition. It confirms that conditions, permits, notifications, personnel, equipment, prescription, smoke requirements, contingency resources, and briefing requirements are in place before a test fire.
Training standard: If any required Go/No-Go answer is NO, implementation is not allowed. Stop, correct the issue, or postpone the burn.
2. Preliminary Questions
Before working the main checklist, the Burn Boss must decide whether conditions have changed since the prescription was developed.
A. Have conditions changed in or adjacent to the unit?
Examples include drought conditions, fuel loading changes, site changes, or risk factors not considered in the prescription.

3. Interactive Go/No-Go Checklist

4. Test Fire Decision
If all required checklist items are YES, conduct and document a test fire. The final decision is whether the burn can still be carried out according to the approved plan and meet the planned objective.

5. Scenario Practice
Work through three Burn Boss decision scenarios.
Scenario 1: Forecast Shift
All resources are on site, but the updated spot forecast shows winds above the prescription maximum during the ignition window.
Scenario 2: Missing Notification
The Air Quality Management District and ECC were notified, but two adjacent landowners listed in the plan were not reached.
Scenario 3: Test Fire Looks Good
All checklist items are YES. The test fire shows expected flame length, spread, smoke lift, and holding resources are effective.
